David France; 2017; USA; 105 min.
Oscar-nominated director David France (HOWTOSURVIVE A PLAGUE) expertly uses incredible archive film footage to explore the puzzling 1992 death of renowned Stonewall veteran and transgender rights activist Marsha P. Johnson. Victoria Cruz of the NYC Anti-Violence Project investigates the mystery, interviewing friends and family and weaving their memories into a suspenseful detective story. Extensive footage of friend and activist Sylvia Rivera reminds us that transgender people and gender-nonconformists blazed a trail for civil rights, leaving a legacy that must be defended rigorously in the spirit of these two pioneers of the movement.
