Donna Deitch; 1985; USA; 96 min.
Donna Deitch’s first narrative feature was groundbreaking upon its 1985 release: a love story about two women, made on a shoestring budget, by a woman. In this adaptation of the beloved novel by Jane Ruleset in 1959, straitlaced East Coast professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) files for divorce and winds up with young free spirit Cay (Patricia Charbonneau). Their undeniable chemistry and slow seduction unfold against a breathtaking desert landscape. An evocative jukebox soundtrack and vivid cinematography exude a sense of tender yearning and emotional candor. Digital restoration by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Criterion Collection / Janus Films in conjunction with the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project and the Sundance Institute.
